On a hot Sunday Olivia and I headed down to Waco to see what all the Magnolia hype is about. The highway medians were filled with the latest blooms of wildflowers. Indian blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) is in full bloom this week. These flowers bloom from April to June across much of the state. When viewed in a mass, the brilliant combinaImage titletion of red, orange, and yellow resembles brightly woven fabric.

Mixed in among the Indian blanket are pink evening primrose. They die at the end of each day and are replaced with new blooms. It was worth the drive just to see this Texas display of flowers.

Waco is about 1 1/2 hours from Keller and straight down I-35. Normally we would be blazing down and barely notice the town on our way to the more exciting Austin.

Straight to the silos made famous by Chip and Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper fame. The silos are really ugly and completely remind me of those formidable bras in Image titlecatalogs from my childhood. The rusty exterior doesn't help either. The shop is not actually in the silo, but in a building adjacent to it. My daughter is sure that is where they store their piles of cash and they needed two just in case one fills up too fast.

The shop is filled with baskets, bottles, blankets, fake greenery and all things "magnolia". If you can elbow your way to the front of the displays you'll find much is repeated throughout the place. I'm sure it's hard to keep anything in stock very long here. Image title

The outside was a green space with a covered eating space so that you can hit the many food trucks surrounding the outdoor space. The longest line was for the sweet tea truck. I'm not surprised, because it was H-O-T.

The $10 parking really didn't earn it's price because after little more than 30 minutes we had seen what there was to see, bought some popcorn and really did not want to wait in the line around the building for the bakery.

There is a cute shopping area a few blocks away. I swear my daughter can sniff out a boutique with her eyes closed. She was able to find some great bargains.

We hit the higImage titlehway and stopped into the Czech Stop for their famous fruit kolaches. Our favorite is the cream cheese and strawberry. You have to be prepared to eat them within a day or they lose the fluffy texture.

All in all, it was a good day and fun to get that checked of the ole' bucket list.
