Two scams to avoid after buying a home

Purchasing property seems like an endless parade of papers to sign and fees to pay. But if you get letters in the mail after closing that ask you to pay for these two services, be sure to throw them in the trash.

1. Homestead Exemption Company's: How much does it cost to file your homestead exemption?

There's no fee for filing your homestead exemption in Texas, so don't pay a company to do what you can do for free. You download the form from the state and file it with your local appraisal district; it doesn’t cost anything.
2. About that deed-retrieval invoice ...
And if you receive an invoice from a company charging you for a copy of our deed, throw it away—you'll get a copy from the title company.
